The author, Ann Spence Warner was born in Napanee, Ontario Canada but came to Colorado as a young child. Because of periodic bouts with illness, she frequently missed school, but did graduate from the old East Denver High School located at 19th (Nineteenth) and Stout Streets in Denver. It was shortly after this period of time that Ann Spence Warner went to live on the Sidesaddle Ranch near Sedalia, Colorado to recuperate from surgery. When the Arapahoe School opened in Denver, Colo. 1873, it served school district no. 1 as both high school and grade school. By 1875 there was a separate high school section in the school (with its own principal) called Denver High School.
